The Survey Process

Here we provide a few notes for those unfamiliar with the logistics, processes and operations involved in undertaking a housing stock condition survey.

All too often timetables for surveys are identified without consideration or allowance for adequate preparatory design or post survey analysis. A full understanding of the scope and sequence of survey operations involved is critical in ensuring that surveys  fully meet the objectives and data requirements identified

Within the framework of the overall methods discussed elsewhere on this site, three stages of operation are usually required :

  1. Preparation: Survey Design - Briefing, appraisal, pre- documentation, stock pre-appraisals, variant coding, sample selection, surveyor briefing, final survey planning and documentation
  2. The Survey: - Survey teams on-site. Data progressively input to computer.
  3. Computer, assessment, programmes, Documentation - Collation, and analysis of survey results; unit cost estimates; Conversion & transfer of data, production of final output documents and report, etc.

In order to ensure that the survey and sample are designed effectively, adequate information needs to be compiled by the stock owner at the outset.

In order to ensure that the survey provides accurate and representative results, procedures need to be in place to maximise surveyor access to properties and to ensure that staff are adequately briefed and trained for the job.
